Resilience is not the same as income
Most households judge how they are doing by what comes in. The better question is what happens when something stops. A retrenchment, a long hospital stay, a funeral three regions away.
Resilience is not about earning more. It is about how long a family holds its shape when the money pauses.
Ask one question at the table this month. If the main income stopped on Friday, how many weeks could the household carry on before something important gave way? Rent, school fees, the car that gets someone to work.
Most families have never counted. The counting is the useful part.
Start small, and start this month
Six months of savings defeats people before they begin. Three weeks is a real target. Build that first, then stretch it.
Know what you already have
Many Namibians are better covered than they think and worse organised than they realise. Group cover through an employer, a policy taken out years ago, a scheme a parent still pays into. If nobody can find the paperwork, the cover may as well not exist.
Put the policy schedule, the beneficiary names and one phone number somewhere two people know about.
Beneficiaries are the quiet failure point. They are chosen once and rarely revisited, and then a marriage, a birth or a death changes who should receive what. Check yours this year.
The small decisions carry the weight
Resilience is not a product you buy. It is a set of small, unglamorous decisions made before you need them. A named beneficiary. A file someone else can find. Three weeks of room to breathe.
